Hockey Origins
Most believe that ice hockey started out as a stick and ball game, performed outdoors, and modified to the icy problems of Canada within the 19th century by British soldiers and other immigrants to Canada. Ice Hockey

The first Hockey League to use professional players was the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League in 1902. Hockey teams in Ontario and Michigan joined with Pennsylvania to form the IPHL in 1904, the first international hockey league that was fully professional, the International Professional Hockey League. Montreal formed the NHA, National Hockey Association, in 1910. The NHA was responsible for many refinements introduced into modern ice hockey rules of play, such as the major and minor penalty system, and game periods split in to three 20 minutes each. The NHA reorganized in 1917 into the NHL, National Hockey League, and was expanded in 1924 into the United States.
Leagues of professional ice hockey were developed later in European countries. In 1916, the Switzerland National League A was one of the first to be founded. There are many professional hockey leagues today in Europe, the top professional leagues being the Swedish Elitserien league, the Czech Extraliga league, the Finnish SM-liiga league, and the Kontinental League.
